The Papuans deceive their spirits by setting before them only the tail of the animal, and making the animal itself run while they say : Here, you have a piece of a dog or of a pig. In Leh, little Thibet, a mother fouls the face of her child with filth, which so disfigures the child that the spirits think he is very hateful, and do not envy the mother. Hateful names are given children for the same reason.
